Rahul Gupta, a NIFT graduate from Delhi, started his career by working at United Colors of Benetton. While working for a company, he realised he could own a company himself. But at that time, it was just an idea, something he was just thinking about. Later, when he was working on importing and selling fabrics to local retailers, he got delivered a box of PVC scrap. When Rahul looked at the box, he immediately had an idea. He thought, “Why can’t I start a company that makes handbags from these scraps?” Till date, he loves to say that he built a business from scrap and not scratch!
Rahul then started looking for a handbag designer and he met Varsha Jain, another NIFT graduate. Varsha and Rahul talked and the former joined the latter not just as a designer but as a business partner. While Rahul was looking at the sourcing and marketing part of the business, Varsha was heading the creative part. Later on, Varsha also became Rahul’s Life partner. Rahul always knew that Yelloe Designs would be an online venture. He trusted the online business model and wanted to partner with brands that could provide the right impetus to Yelloe Designs. And that that is how Myntra happened. Rahul says that when he started Yelloe Designs, he had no clue about online business, how to list products, which factors are important for your product to stand out on a platform etc. Rahul adds that small brands, especially in their initial stage, get to learn a lot from Myntra teams. There were times when Rahul and Varsha’s team were not sure about certain handbag designs, but the Myntra team assured that it would sell and asked them to stock the product. In just a few days, 500 of that handbag was sold online! The sales are especially high during events like End of the Reason Sale (EORS) or the Big Fahsion Festival. “ We earn four or five times of what we usually do during an event like the EORS and BFF,” Rahul says. During the pandemic, Yelloe Designs had to struggle a bit initially. But taking the advice of a Myntra advisor, they decided to make masks. “It wasn’t a big deal, but it helped us. We were able to pay salaries to people and give our workers employment when the world seemed like falling apart,” Rahul says. Rahul and Varsha next plan to add belts shoes, sandals etc to their business. They aim high and plan to be one of the country’s top handbags and accessories seller.
